Why You Should Start you Day With This Instead of Coffee

I know many people could not imagine not having their morning coffee. It has become an immensely engrained social ritual. Many of us most likely put coffee into our system before anything else. I am a victim of this as well! Especially on those cold winter mornings, having that quick hot cup of coffee motivates me to get out the door on my morning commute.

Slowly, I have come to realize that the first thing you put in your body on an empty stomach and on a daily basis sets the tone for your internal environment for the rest of your day.

I’m not saying to not have coffee! But how about before we have that first cup, let’s give our bodies the benefits it needs so we can have the right environment to do what we need to do from what we eat – break down and absorb all those good vitamins, minerals, and nutrients.

It’s not always what we eat (although that is a big part of it), but more importantly what we do with what we eat. And that starts with the environment in our gut.

The first place our food really starts to break down is our stomach. We need a highly acidic environment in order to break down carbohydrates and proteins. We also need a highly acidic stomach to kill off any pathogens that may have gotten in there.

Coffee, at a chemical level is a very acidic beverage. Most of us actually have an abnormally low stomach pH. This can be caused by stress and age. Stress comes in many forms such as environmental toxins, inflammatory foods, lack of sleep, etc. When we have an empty and low pH environment, combined with dehydrated gut first thing in the morning and then we immediately put a very acidic solution into our system – you can imagine what can happen! Upset stomach, diarrhea, cramping, bloating perhaps?

I’m sure many of us have just become so accustomed to these symptoms that they are now “normal” to us.

Instead of starting with coffee, let’s’ give our gut a little TLC. Let’s give it the right “stuff” to create the right environment. Hydration, fiber, and a little bit of acidity – the combination can help you stomach produce a stable environment that will help with digestion and absorption.

Try this morning lemon and chia seed elixir first thing in the morning:

  • 8 oz of water
  • 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • Squeeze juice from half a lemon

Stir it up and enjoy!

If the taste of ACV is too bitter, add a bit of honey or Stevia for some sweetness!

Apple cider vinegar is a mixture of fermented apple, bacteria, and yeast. It actually helps your stomach gradually produce more stomach acid. Fermented products are rich in probiotics which add good bacteria and enzymes to your intestinal flora. These agents are needed for breaking down and absorbing the nutrients out of food. Without that right environment, we end up losing out on actually getting what we need out of our food!

Chia seeds are a great form of omega 3’s, fiber, and protein. We all absolutely need more fiber in our diets for better digestion, improving transit time, and nice solid poop! What an easy way to get max benefits from something so small and tasteless!

Lemon has many great benefits but it really helps our liver and gallbladder to produce and release bile – which we need for break down of fats. Lemons contain vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant, and are a source of plant compounds called flavonoids, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Antioxidants are compounds that help protect the body’s cells from damage.

So instead of reaching for coffee first thing in the morning, give this a go instead. Afterward, you can have your coffee! You can have your elixir, and drink your coffee too!
